This term our topic is ‘Food Marvellous Food’. We will be learning about where different foods comes from
and talking about which types of food are better for us than others. We will plant our own beans and peas along with some sunflower seeds and work on developing a little growing area outside. Each week we will be involved in some kind of baking or cooking linked to a focus story. There is a lot we can learn from being involved with food such as practising our cutting, chopping and stirring skills and developing our understanding of different processes such as melting and dissolving. There will be things the children do not like to eat but we hope to encourage them to try new things.
Nursery Curriculum Overview
Knowledge Organiser
Nursery Information
Curriculum
In Nursery we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. Page copies of a document called ‘What to expect when’ will be placed on our noticeboard in the cloakroom. This is an excellent break down of the steps in development in each area of the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and it will support you as parents in understanding and supporting your child’s learning.
Physical Development
Physical development is a key area of the Early Years curriculum. Children are given lots of opportunities to develop their gross motor skills outside in the woodland area, riding on the trikes and bikes. and in accessing the climbing equipment. In addition to this, we are very lucky to be carrying on with our weekly yoga sessions with Lianne and this term we will have a go at gymnastics! The older children have a few more ‘Move to Write’ sessions left. We hope you have found the information we have sent home useful regarding these sessions, and have found the time to have a go at some of the suggested pre-writing shape activities.
Wellies
In Nursery we will be exploring the outdoors in all weathers! We have a wonderful outdoor area for the young children but it can get very muddy. We are very fortunate to have all in one waterproof suits for our children, but we do ask that you provide your child with a pair of wellies. Please ensure children’s names are written inside.
Each week we will take part in Welly Wednesday activities together with the children from the Reception class. For many children this becomes the favourite part of the week. We get kitted up and spend the morning outdoors. We encourage children to find out about the outside world, creatures and habitats, explore using their senses and use natural materials to make pictures or dens etc.

Communication
We aim to communicate openly and effectively with parents/carers at all times. Class Dojo is a great way to send messages between home and school whereas Tapestry allows us to focus upon recording and sharing significant achievements in your child’s learning and development. We encourage parents also to share ‘WOW’ moments from home. There may be things that your child does at home that we don’t see at school!
Rewards
As well as selecting a child to wear the ‘Golden Jumper’ each week, we give out a daily ‘Monster of the Day’ certificate which links to the monster dojo points that children collect further up school.
A very warm welcome to Reception Class!
Class Teacher: Miss C Taylor
Senior Teaching Assistant: Mrs P Moore
Support Staff: Miss K Reid, Miss S Cammock, Miss A Ballantyne, Miss L Blaze
We are always at the classroom door each morning and at the end of the school day if there is anything you would like to ask.
Alternatively, please send us a Class Dojo message and we will reply as soon as possible.

Classroom environment
In Reception we aim to provide a safe, happy and engaging learning environment that allows our children to learn through a combination of purposeful play and adult interaction. We have half-termly topics that we follow and each week we have a focus text linked to this. We also follow children’s interests to shape the learning.
We use a free-flow approach during continuous provision time. Children are encouraged to access our wonderful outdoor areas as much as possible throughout the day. We have plenty of waterproofs and wellington boots for the children so no bad weather spoils our play!
Communication
Please sign up to Class Dojo to keep up to date with the latest Reception class news and events.
We use Tapestry to record children’s learning throughout the year.
It is a secure online Learning Journal to record photos, observations and comments, in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, to build up a record of your child’s WOW moments during their time with us.
This system allows us to work with parents and carers to share information and record the children’s play and learning in and outside of the classroom. Tapestry is a website which can be accessed on a computer or laptop, and also on any Apple or Android device such as a tablet or smart phone. Parents are also able to upload their own photographs and videos, as well as comment on observations added from school.
Please do take advantage of this feature as the children enjoy sharing their home experiences with their peers and we love to see what they have been up to outside of school!
Reading
We follow the Little Wandle scheme for reading. Children read 3 times a week in their guided reading group and once 1:1 with an adult. Their new book is then sent home for children to share with their parents/carers.
Children receive a raffle ticket every time they read which is then entered into the monthly draw to win a brand new book!
Please read with your child at home for at least 10 minutes each day to help develop their decoding, fluency and comprehension skills. Please write a comment and sign in your child’s yellow reading record when you have read with them. If you need any help with how to support your child with reading at home, please speak to a member of staff.
P.E
This half-term our PE days are every Tuesday and Thursday.
Please ensure your child comes to school on this day wearing their PE uniform.
Forest Friday
Each week we will take part in Forest School activities together with the children from our Nursery Class. For many children this becomes the favourite part of the week. Basing our activities upon a story each week, we get kitted up and spend the morning outdoors. We encourage children to find out about the outside world, creatures and habitats, explore using their senses and use natural materials to make pictures or dens etc.
Stay and Play
Every half term we run a ‘Stay and Play’ session where parents and carers are invited into class for a fun themed play session with the children. These last around 1 hour. Please check on Class Dojo for dates regarding these.

Welcome to Year 1
The changes from Reception class to Year 1 can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming. We have curated our curriculum to meet the needs of all our pupils and to provide them with a varied but familiar structure.
Foundation subjects (often known as Topics) are taught in modules which allow learners to deepen their understanding and improve both short term and long-term memory.
In Autumn term 1, we uncover key knowledge within ourselves and deepen experiences through Art, Science, D&T, History and PSHE.
Religious Education (RE) and Music are taught weekly by Mrs Brown (Thursday pm.)

Phonics & Reading
In Year 1, children learn to read using phonics. At Ormsgill, we follow the Little Wandle Letters & Sounds scheme. Each day we learn a new sound.
Reading books are closely matched to phonics learning. Children should read frequently to ensure they keep up-to-date and make maximum progress.
Children should be able to read a phonics book fluently before they progress to the next book.
For more information about our phonics program, click here.
Welcome to Year 2’s Class Page
There are lots of staff working in Year 2 this year.
Miss Donnelly (class teacher)

PE Days
Please note, we have PE on Tuesday, swimming on a Thursday morning and yoga on a Friday morning.
You will need to ensure that your child has the correct kit, following the school uniform policy. This year, we ask that children come to school dressed in their PE kit and wear a warm, green jumper with the school logo.
Thank you.
Reading
We are very lucky to have a lot of brand new reading books in school for us to enjoy! These books match the phonic ability of each child, linking in to our Little Wandle Letters and Sounds phonics scheme.
In addition to reading these new books in school, we will send home a share together book. This is an opportunity for your child to practice reading or it could be a chance for them to listen to a grown-up read at home.
We encourage children to read the same book at least 3 times to build confidence, fluency and to develop their ability to read key words by sight.
Once a child has read frequently at home, they can place their reading book in the basket on the side of the classroom worktop and it will be changed weekly.
This term we will be looking at place value and addition and subtraction in maths and first person narratives in English. We are looking at seasonal food and making tarts in Design and Technology and Rocks in science.
Our PE days will be Tuesday (gymnastics) and Wednesday (karate).
